Electricity Sector
Since its inception in 2000, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation "KAHRAMAA" has been working to develop and upgrade the electricity sector, the most vital sectors in the country. Therefore, its inception marked the advent of a new era of progress and prosperity for electricity sector in Qatar.

Generation and Substations
The electricity sector has witnessed remarkable development over the past years. The production in 4Q 2013 was reached 8755 MW while it was 4032 MW in 2008. It is a clear indication of the dramatic growing size of the electricity sector in Qatar. That was also accompanied, and is expected to reach 10170MW the and of 2017 by a remarkable expansion in the size of electricity main transmission network. Main substations reached 240 substations in 4Q 2013 compared with 139 substations in 2Q 2008 and 87 substations in 2000. Vital projects including the Pearl and Lusail were connected to the network as well.
Cables and overhead lines 400/220/132/66/11 kV witness increase as well. At the same time, there was a major growth in the number of distribution substations to more than 10,000 substations in 1Q 2014. This number is planned to increase to 14.000 substations in 2017 to keep pace with the tremendous development in the economic activities in Qatar.

Cables and OHL
In January 2016, the length of cables in the transmission network was 2880km, while the total length of overhead lines (OHL) was 1990 km. The total investments in electricity sector since KAHRAMAA inception in 2000 till 2016 was estimated at $13 billion. A budget of $3 billion has been allocated for the planned transmission and distribution networks projects dueing the period 2017 - 2022.

KAHRAMAA is monitoring and managing electricity transmission network through National Control Center while the Distribution Control Center monitors the distribution network. The control centers are equipped with the latest technological applications and the technical cadres with the highest level of expertise and competence. We plan to construct a new distribution control center to meet the great expansion of distribution network.
Electricity Expansion Projects
Development and expansion of transmission network projects in Qatar draw the attention of major international companies. KAHRAMAA projects are among the largest electricity projects in the world. Now, phase XI is in progress. KAHRAMAA Technical Affairs Directorate, represented in Electricity Projects Department, holds the responsibility of all contracts. The department endeavors to complete al projects within the planned timeframe.

GCC Interconnection Grid
The interconnection to GCC interconnection grid in 220 kV has been completed in 2009. In 2013, it was upgraded to 400 kV to increase the efficiency of the GCC electricity interconnection.
Electricity Demand
The demand for electricity in the State of Qatar has increased in the recent years. The maximum network load increased from 941 MW on September, 10th 1988 to 3,990 MW on September, 10th 2008 and reached the maximum in 2012 by 6255 MW, while it went down again in 2016 at 7435 MW (according to the recent statistics). Electricity per capita consumption grew also from 12.963 KW to 17.774 KW in 2007 less transmission and distribution losses. Electricity customers' number increased as well within the last ten years from 132.429 in 1998 to 191.476 customers in 2007, while it reached 350.000 in 2016.
